Diyabette Oksidatif Stres ve Antioksidanların Rolü

Year 2017, Volume: 1 Issue: 1, 7 - 13, 01.01.2017

Abstract

The Role of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidants in Diabetes Mellitus

Year 2017, Volume: 1 Issue: 1, 7 - 13, 01.01.2017

Abstract

Oxidative stress has a crucial role in the development of diabetic complications. Hyperglycemia in diabetic patients enhances free radical formation. This causes an insufficient amount of endogenous antioxidants to balance toxic reactive species which then results high amount of oxidative stress. Antioxidant defense mechanisms may have both enzymatic and non enzymatic pathways. Non-enzymatic antioxidants are Vitamin A, C, E and glutathione and the enzymatic antioxidants are superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase. This review will discuss the oxidative stress as well as the importance of antioxidants in diabetes mellitus
