Armenian Diaspora and Reconstruction of Past in the Armenian National Identity Formation

Abstract

This study argues the function of so-called genocide claims and the role of the Armenian diaspora in construction of Armenian identity. Within the framework, some sociological theories, the ethnicity theories as circumstantialism, primordialism and constructionism, and some identity and diaspora arguments are being highlightened. According to those theories, construction and signification of national identity is based on common past, common language, common religion, common race and blood relation as well as mythical histories, symbols and literature. At this point, it is argued that the Armenian diaspora is trying to maintain their national identity based the myth of socalled genocide.

ERMENİ ULUSAL KİMLİĞİNDE ERMENİ DİASPORASI VE GEÇMİŞİN KURGULANMASI

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, sözde soykırım iddialarının Ermeni kimliğinin oluşu-mundaki yerini ve işlevini incelemekte ve bu işlev içinde diasporanın rolünü tartışmaktadır. Bu çerçevede kimi sosyoloji teorileri ve ilkselci, durumcu ve yapısalcı gibi etnisite teorileri ile kimlik ve diaspora tartışmaları ele alınmaktadır. Bu teorilerden bazılarına göre, ulusal kimliğin belirlenmesi ya da pekiştirilmesi, ortak geçmiş, ortak dil, din, ırk ve kan bağı gibi belirleyicilere dayandığı gibi, mitsel hikayelere, edebi eserlere ve sembollere de dayandırılabilir. Bu noktada, Ermeni diyasporasının, mitsel soykırım iddialarına dayanarak Ermeni ulusal kimliğinin devamını ve etnisitenin bekasını sağlama çabasında olduğu tartışılmaktadır.
