The Portrayal of the Huns and Attila in Ammianus Marcellinus, Priscus and Iordanes

Abstract

In this paper, the portrayals of the Huns and Attila by three Roman historians from three different centuries are examined. The Huns, who had triggered the Great Migrations left their traces on the Roman Empire, the self-proclaimed centre of civilization. These traces were differently interpreted by historians, who lived in three different periods. For Ammianus Marcellinus, who has been probably the most well-known historian of the Late Antiquity, the “savage” Huns had prepared the way into defeat against the Goths in Adrianople, 378 AD. For Priscus, who had been sent to the camp of Attila in 448 as a part of the political mission, the Huns were almost a civilized tribe, which was being led by a mighty and arrogant Hunnic king. In the 6th century, when the Huns were nothing but mercenaries, Iordanes was describing the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains of the previous century and praising the military leadership qualities of Attila. Whatever their motives may be, Attila and the Huns left an unprecedented fear and awe inspiring marks on this period of the Roman historiography.

AMMIANUS MARCELLINUS, PRISCUS VE IORDANES’DE ATTİLÂ VE HUN TASVİRLERİ

Abstract

Bu makale Hunların ve Attila’nın, üçü de farklı yüzyıllarda yaşamış, üç Romalı yazar tarafından nasıl betimlendiklerini ele almaktadır. Kavimler Göçü’nün tetikleyicisi Hunlar yaşadıkları dönemdeki medeniyetin merkezi sayılan Roma imparatorluğunda derin izler bırakmışlardır. Bu izler farklı yüzyıllardaki yazarlar tarafından farklı şekilde aktarılmıştır. Geç Antik Çağ’ın en ünlü tarihçilerinden biri olan Ammianus Marcellinus için, İS 378 yılında Gotlara karşı Hadrianopolis’de yenilgiyle sonuçlanan savaşa giden yolu “vahşi Hunlar” hazırlamış; 448 yılında Attila’nın sarayına diplomatik görevle gönderilen Priscus medeni halklar gibi sütunlarla süslü bir sarayda yaşayan, kibirli ve kudretli bir Hun kralıyla tanışmış; Hunların artık güçlerini yitirdiği 6. yüzyılda yazan Iordanes ise Katalan Savaşı’nı anlatırken Attila’nın askeri lider özelliklerini yüceltmekten kendini alamamıştı. Bu yazarların amaçları ne olursa olsun Attila ve Hunlar, bu yüzyıllarda Roma tarih yazıcılığında daha önce örneği olmamış korku ve hayranlık dolu izler bırakmışlardır.
