The Translation of Poetry from English into Turkish: Orhan Veli Kanık and His Poet-Translators

Yıl 2016, Sayı: 24, 193 - 218, 12.08.2016

Öz

In view of the fact that poetry translation is a very hard and creative process, this paper entails an analysis of the translations of one of the Garip poems Dedikodu by the contemporary Turkish poet Orhan Veli, undertaken by poet-translators Talât Sait Halman and Murat Nemet-Nejat. Following and initial section on the different approaches to the translation of poetry, the poems translated from Turkish into English have been studied. After a short summary of Garip poetry and Orhan Veli and his poet translators, the two translations have been analyzed comparatively. The aim of the study is not only to provide a recitation of the difficulties of translating poetry, but also to consider the different possibilities in the translation of poetry and to analyze these within the scope of translation studies.
