Giampiero Lombardi graduated in 1992 with a degree in Forest Sciences. In 1996, he earned his doctoral degree in Forage and Range Science, specializing in Grazing-Land Management.
From 2005 to April 2015, he served as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Agriculture, Forest, and Food Sciences (formerly Department of Agronomy, Forest, and Land Management) at the University of Turin. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the same department and coordinates the “Grassland Ecology & Management” research group.
His primary research areas include:
- agronomic and pastoral management of pastures and meadows;
- vegetation surveys and evaluations of pastures, meadows, and forage crops;
- grassland and rangeland ecology;
- assessment of grassland ecosystem services;
- vegetation dynamics and restoration of abandoned range-grasslands;
- conservation of grazing lands;
- soil-plant-animal interactions;
- evaluation and promotion of the forage-to-dairy/meat products food chain;
- assessing the forage quality of alpine summer pastures;
- land-use and land-cover assessments in relation to socio-economic and agricultural policies.
He participated in approximately 40 national and international research projects. He authored or co-authored over 200 scientific contributions, including 62 published in ISI peer-reviewed journals.
He is skilled in computer software and tools relevant to his work, including word and data processing, statistical analysis, GIS packages, and GPS technology.
He teaches the following courses:
- Ecology and Management of Alpine Agropastoral Systems and Sustainable Management of Mountain Livestock Farms (Master's Degree in Forest Sciences);
- Tools and Methods for Data Analysis (Master's Degrees in Agricultural Science and Animal Sciences).
He coordinates the FAO-CIHEAM Mountain Pasture Network, a European network dedicated to mountain grasslands. Additionally, he is affiliated with the NBFC (National Biodiversity Future Center, Italy) and NatRisk (University of Turin Interdepartmental Research Centre on Natural Risks in Mountain and Hilly Environments).
