Social Work Approach to Sex Workers and Their Problems Behind The Invisibility

Year 2024, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 78 - 95, 30.06.2024

Abstract

Sex workers are among the groups that are not accepted and ignored by the general public and are subjected to exclusion and discrimination. They work in environments open to abuse and exploitation, especially violence, and they cannot easily reach the necessary protection and support. In this respect, sex workers are considered to be among the vulnerable groups in need of social work. The prevalence of sex work is not known due to its position in ‘invisibility’. As a social justice and human rights profession, it is important for social work to provide support to all stigmatised, marginalised and ignored groups within the framework of rights-based approach. Sex workers, who are among the groups in need of advocacy, also have different needs and problems arising from intersectionality. Although there are studies addressing sex work within the scope of social work in international publications, it is noteworthy that there are limited number of studies directly addressing this issue within the framework of social work in national publications. In this study, it is aimed to draw attention to the problems of sex workers and to contribute to the related field by including the importance of social work on the basis of the needs and problems of sex workers.

Görünmezlik Ardındaki Seks İşçileri ve Sorunlarına Sosyal Hizmet Yaklaşımı

Year 2024, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 78 - 95, 30.06.2024
