The Concept of Power and Its Conceptual-Metaphorical Representations In Donald Trump's Speech

Abstract

This paper examines the conceptualization of power in the political discourse of Donald Trump, focusing on the metaphorical representations of power in his speeches. By applying Cognitive Linguistics and Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), this study explores how Trump uses metaphors to construct and convey ideas of strength, dominance, control, and leadership. The research investigates several types of metaphors including ontological, container, force, and personification metaphors to reveal how power is represented in his rhetoric. Through a close reading of selected speeches from his presidency, this study seeks to understand how Trump's metaphorical use of language shapes public perception of his authority and leadership. This work contributes to the broader field of critical discourse analysis (CDA), offering insight into the ways political figures manipulate language to assert power and influence.
