Bibliometric Analysis of Orthodontic Theses in Turkey

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the distribution of theses published between 1968 and 2023 in the Department of Orthodontics at the National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) according to years, types, indexes used, universities where they were published, fields of study and number of pages, by bibliometric analysis and to evaluate the current status and development of relevant theses. Methods: By using the Detailed Search tab on the YÖK National Thesis Center website and selecting the Department of Orthodontics, 1745 published theses were found. The obtained data were transferred to Microsoft Excel and listed. Microsoft Excel program theses are listed according to their types, indexes used, universities where they were published, work intensity, years and current status according to the page. Basic monitoring rates (total, percentages, minimum, maximum, average, frequency tables and based on these tables) are used in data analysis. Results: According to the findings of the study, a total of 611 theses were published in the field of dentistry as specialty theses, 1053 as doctoral theses, and 81 as master's theses. It was observed that a total of 6351 indexes were used in postgraduate theses in the field of orthodontics. The top three universities publishing the most theses were determined to be Marmara University, Istanbul University, and Ankara University, respectively. When the theses were categorized according to research areas, it was found that the majority were related to clinical studies. The year 2018 had the highest number of theses published. The average length of the theses was determined to be 117.07 pages. Conclusions: It has been concluded that there has been a significant increase in the number of postgraduate theses with the commencement of specialty exams in dentistry, while the proportion of theses published in the doctoral thesis category has decreased over the years. Especially after 2014, there has been a substantial increase in the number of theses. Although clinical studies are predominant in postgraduate theses in the field of orthodontics, there is a growing interest in computer-assisted experimental studies in recent years.

Türkiye’de Ortodonti Alanında Yapılmış Tezlerin Bibliyometrik Analizi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, Yükseköğretim Kurulu (YÖK) Başkanlığı Ulusal Tez Merkezi’nde Ortodonti Ana Bilim Dalı’nda 1968 ile 2023 yılları arasında yayımlanmış olan tezlerin yıllara, türlerine, kullanılan dizinlere, yayımlandığı üniversitelere, çalışma alanlarına ve sayfa sayılarına göre dağılımını bibliyometrik analizle tespit etmek ve ilgili tezlerin mevcut durumunu ve gelişimini değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: YÖK Ulusal Tez Merkezi sitesinde Detaylı Tarama sekmesi kullanılarak Ortodonti Ana Bilim Dalı seçilerek yapılan taramada 1745 adet yayımlanmış teze ulaşılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler Microsoft Excel programına aktarılarak listelenmiştir. Microsoft Excel programında tezlerin türlerine, kullanılan dizinlere, yayımlandığı üniversitelere, çalışma alanlarına, yıllara ve sayfa sayılarına göre dağılımı listelenmiştir. Verilerin analizinde temel istatistiksel yöntemler (toplam, yüzdeler, minimum, maksimum, ortalama, sıklık tabloları ve bu tablolara dayalı grafikler) kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışma bulgularına göre diş hekimliğinde uzmanlık tezi türünde 611, doktora tezi türünde 1053 ve yüksek lisans tezi türünde ise 81 tez yayımlanmıştır. Ortodonti alanındaki lisansüstü tezlerde toplamda 6351 dizin kullanıldığı görülmüştür. En çok tez yayımlayan üç üniversite sırasıyla Marmara Üniversitesi, İstanbul Üniversitesi ve Ankara Üniversitesi olarak belirlenmiştir. Tezler çalışma alanlarına göre kategorize edildiğinde en fazla klinik çalışmalar ile ilgili tezler olduğu tespit edilmiştir. 2018 yılı en fazla tezin yayımlandığı yıldır. Tezlerin ortalama olarak 117,07 sayfa uzunluğunda olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Diş hekimliğinde uzmanlık sınavının yapılmaya başlanmasıyla lisansüstü tez sayılarında ciddi bir artışın yaşandığı ve doktora tezi türünde yayımlanan tezlerin yıllara göre oransal olarak azaldığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Tez sayısında özellikle 2014 yılından sonra ciddi bir artış gözlenmiştir. Ortodonti alanında yapılan lisansüstü tezlerde klinik çalışmalar ağırlıklı olmasına rağmen son yıllarda bilgisayar destekli deneysel çalışmalara ilgi giderek artmaktadır.
