The increase in the number of awards in the century we live in also has a counterpart in the awards given in the field of culture and arts. The foundations of the "European Museum of the Year Award", an international museum award held every year since 1977, were laid by museum scientists Kenneth Hudson, Richard Hoggart and John Letts. EMYA is modeled after the "Museum of the Year" model, which is a national award given in the United Kingdom (Hudson, 1981; 1988). This award, given in cooperation with the International Council of Museums (ICOM), aims to draw attention to new ideas in the world of museology and to create a bridge between society and museum professionals. This organization, which operated under the name EMYA when it was founded, has been awarded different museology awards such as EMYA, European Council Prize and Silletto Prize, Kenneth Hudson Award, Meyvaert Museum Prize, Portimão Museum Prize and Special Awards since 1997 under the name of European Museum Forum [EMF]. One of the award categories, the Meyvaert Environmental Sustainability Awards, is based on all initiatives related to an ecological attitude, policy or practices that the museum adopts or tries to adopt in the development of new exhibitions and in all aspects of its structure and operation. Museums should consider the environmental impact of exhibitions and other resources they consume, such as building materials, water and paper, and reduce their waste. This also includes encouraging visitors to be aware of environmentally sustainable ways of living their lives and more specifically how environmental considerations impact visitors.
