According to most scholars, religion dates back to the beginning of human history. That is to say, religion is seen as one of the most important facts affecting people. This influence on society unites their members in common points and gives them an identity. However, over the time, it would seem that religion has diminished its influence on people; instead, currents such as nationalism and communism have come in sight. In Western societies, the detachment from religion started early, whereas in Eastern societies, this process took longer time. In Turkey, this transformation has started with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This article will attempt to investigate the transaction between religion and nationalism. In this context, it will focus on the question whether nationalism could replace religion or not.
