The field of psychohistory emerged in the 1960s with the inclusion of psychology to history-related scholarly disciplines such as politics, economics, and culture. Even though the term, psychohistory, was first used as a popular notion in 1951 in Foundation, the science fiction trilogy of Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), this term was actually used in the 1920s and psychobiographical studies began to be conducted in the 1910s. Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis, is often referred to as the author of the first psychohistory work. E. Erikson's Young Man Luther (1958) is accepted as the first academic psychohistory work and Erikson is seen as the founding father of psychohistory. Since the emergence of the discipline, there has been a trend towards psychobiography studies in the field of psychohistory. Although the roots of psychobiography go back to Plutarch, Freud was the first to apply a formalized metapsychology. Freud called this field applied psychoanalysis, arguing that psychoanalysis can also be done outside the clinic and gave the first example of psychohistory / psychobiography on how to apply the method of psychoanalysis to biography and how to interpret the findings with his work on Leonardo Da Vinci.
