Abstract

Pandemic, Lockdown, and Everday Experiences of Elderly Adults

Year 2022, Issue: 15, 309 - 340, 30.12.2022

Abstract

This study examines how the elderly perceived, evaluated and experienced the COVID-19 Pandemic and curfews, which can be referred to as a crisis period. As a descriptive analysis, this study aims to identify possible strategies for designing social policies and services that can meet the needs of individuals over the age of 65 while at the same time observing their rights. The concepts of "benevolent patronage" and "ageism" are used as an explanatory framework in the mutual evaluation and analysis of the policies and practices of the pandemic period in Turkey and the perspectives of individuals over the age of 65. Through in-depth interviews, this study analyzes the reflections of the policies and the compulsory closure decisions implemented for adults over the age of 65 in the first period of the Pandemic in Turkey, which was deemed necessary in some respects, and yet criticized as the process progressed by being discriminatory against elders even if these policies were well-intentionally aimed at protecting them. As the interviews reveal, the official language and practices also contribute to the construction of discriminatory behaviors against the elderly that we see on social media.
