First Reflections of The Perception of Social Responsibility in Andrew Carnegie’s “The Gospel of Wealth”

Abstract

How far can we antedate the basis of corporate social responsibility and social benefit activities of today's businesses? If we had a chance to precede to the Industrial Revolution, would it be possible to detect traces of the concept of social responsibility in the understandings of timely capital-owning entrepreneurs? This study, designed to respond to these questions, analyses the views scribed in the book "Gospel of Wealth" by Andrew Carnegie, who left insights to the field of Management with his activities integrating concepts such as entrepreneurship, philanthropy and human love in the late 19th century. The book review also aims to discuss the potential of the author's views, which shed light on the socio-political and socio-economic environment of the era, to inspire contemporary perception of corporate social responsibility. The study examines initial 106 pages of the work published in 1900, with the focus on Introduction, the Gospel of Wealth and Advantages of Poverty chapters.

Andrew Carnegie'nin “The Gospel of Wealth” (Servetin Kutsal Kitabı) Eserinde Sosyal Sorumluluk Algısının İlk Yansımaları

Abstract

Günümüz işletmelerinde kurumsal soysal sorumluluk ve toplumsal fayda amaçlı yapılan faaliyetlerin temelini ne kadar eskiye dayandırabiliriz? Sanayi Devrimi’ne kadar geri dönebilsek, sosyal sorumluluk anlayışının izlerini, dönemin sermaye sahibi girişimcilerinin görüşlerinde yakalamak mümkün müdür? Bu sorulara yanıt bulmak hedefiyle tasarlanan bu çalışma, 19. yüzyılın sonlarında girişimcilik, hayırseverlik ve insan sevgisi gibi kavramlarla bütünleştirdiği faaliyetleriyle, Yönetim alanına damga vuran Andrew Carnegie’nin, ¨Servetin Kutsal Kitabı¨ [Gospel of Wealth] adlı eserinde yer alan görüşlerin, kitap incelemesi yoluyla alan yazınına aktarımını amaçlamaktadır. Yazarın bir girişimci ve hayırsever iş insanı olması yanında dönemin sosyo-politik ve sosyo-ekonomik çevresine ışık tutan görüşlerinin, günümüz kurumsal sosyal sorumluluk anlayışına ilham olma potansiyelini tartışmak da çalışmanın diğer bir amacını oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada, 1900 yılında yayınlanan eserin Giriş, Servetin Kutsal Kitabı ve Yoksulluğun Avantajları başlıklarından oluşan ilk 106 sayfasındaki yazılar incelemeye alınmıştır.
