Media as the Fourth Estate of Democracy: Semiotical Analysis of Abu Ghraib Prison Photographs

Abstract

The media, beyond serving as a means of transmitting information, is positioned as an influential actor that shapes international political processes and the formation of legal norms. This study explores the complex and multilayered interaction between media and democracy, with a particular focus on the United States’ violations of international legal norms during the war in Iraq, in Abu Ghraib Prison and analyzing the role and impact of the media in response to these actions. Within this framework, five photographs taken at Abu Ghraib Prison and disseminated by international media outlets are subjected to a semiotic analysis, aiming to uncover the embedded layers of meaning and the ideological messages conveyed through these visual representations.

Demokrasinin Dördüncü Gücü Medya: Abu Gharib Hapishane Fotoğraflarının Göstergebilimsel Analizi

Abstract

Medya, bilginin aktarımını sağlayan bir iletişim aracı olmanın yanı sıra, uluslararası siyasal süreçlerin ve hukukî normların oluşumuna yön veren etkili bir aktör olarak konumlanmaktadır. Bu bağlamda bu çalışma, medyanın demokrasiyle kurduğu çok katmanlı ilişkiyi tartışmayı amaçlarken, aynı zamanda Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin Irak savaşında Abu Ghraib Hapishanesi’nde gerçekleştirdiği uluslararası hukuk normlarını ihlal eden uygulamalarına odaklanmakta ve medyanın bu eylemler karşısındaki etkisini incelemektedir. Çalışmada, Abu Ghraib Hapishanesi’nde çekilmiş ve uluslararası medya kuruluşları tarafından yayımlanmış beş farklı fotoğraf göstergebilimsel analiz yöntemiyle analiz edilmiş, bu görsellerin taşıdığı anlam ve mesaj katmanları incelenmiştir.
