An Examination of Artificial Intelligence Integration in the Turkish Language Curriculum
Abstract
Technology, which is in a state of constant change and transformation, is becoming increasingly important in education and is steadily broadening its field of application. The digitalization of education has also transformed curricula, which reflect national education policies, and has brought new arrangements in both content and approach. The Turkish language curriculum has responded to this transformation by incorporating artificial intelligence into the instructional process, thereby reflecting current developments. This study aims to determine in which sections of the 2024 Middle School Turkish Language Curriculum, prepared within the framework of the Türkiye Century Maarif Model, artificial intelligence is addressed, through which methods it is integrated into the instructional process, and how it is related to language skills. To this end, document analysis, a qualitative research method, was employed, and the data source was the 2024 Middle School Turkish Language Curriculum published by the Ministry of National Education. The findings reveal that the concept of artificial intelligence appears eleven times (f = 11) under various headings within the sixth-grade theme “Science and Technology” and the eighth-grade themes “Communication and Social Relations” and “Nature and Human.” An examination of the pedagogical approaches employed shows that students are encouraged to conduct research on artificial intelligence, produce texts on the subject, create digital and visual content, take part in oral presentations, and engage in ethical discussions. Artificial intelligence is further associated with the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In conclusion, the 2024 Middle School Turkish Language Curriculum treats artificial intelligence not merely as a technological element but as a dynamic force that transforms learning processes, with the aim of preparing students in line with the demands of the contemporary era. Accordingly, it is recommended that AI-related thematic content, activities, production workshops, and enrichment and differentiation practices be structured across grades 5 through 8 in a balanced, gradual, and skills-based manner.
