AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF PREHEATING TEMPERATURE ON HARDNESS OF EXTRUDED AA6060 PROFILES

Abstract

In aluminum alloys, hardness values are an important reference for the machinability of the material. 6xxx series aluminum alloys are the most widely used alloy type in the extrusion industry. The billet preheating temperature plays an important role for improving the visual and mechanical properties of 6060 alloys. The preheating temperature directly affects the extrusion temperature. By precisely controlling the extrusion temperature and using appropriate heat treatment processes, the desired hardness values and mechanical properties can be achieved. In this experimental study using AA6060 alloy, the effect of billet preheating temperatures on hardness in the extrusion process was experimentally investigated. As a result of the study, the highest hardness values were measured at 430.3 °C (59.07 HB) and 440.2 °C (60.14 HB). In this case, it is shown that there is no practical benefit of increasing the preheating temperatures above 440.2 °C for this study. Considering the energy and cost relationship for heating, there is practically no need to increase the preheating temperature after 440.2 °C, because there is no significant increase in the hardness results. Therefore, this study demonstrates the importance of preheating temperature analysis for extrusion profile plants, especially when large quantities are produced.
