A Naive Glance to Postmodern Architecture in 21st Century: Termination or Transformation?

Abstract

Too many years have past since Venturi’s Las Vegas analysis. Our taste, point of views, and of course our societal structure has changed. Gene Roddenberry’s cult TV series Star Trek which remained years on screen, turned out to be naive, and charming but also deficient for us. Communication channels have been increased. Technology’s rapid progress has surprised even itself. Lyotard’s analysis about postmodern conditions, or Hassan’s renewed descriptions about postmodernism should be moved to another dimension. As Hassan speaks, "... Postmodernism became more than an artistic style or historical trend or Zeitgeist, it is a way of reading all our signs under the mandate of misprision." (Hassan, 2003) For some critics, the postmodern architecture is about to come to a ‘cul de sac’ while we are experiencing the first quarter of the 21st century. But the matter for question is, whether the postmodern architecture is undergoing a transformation, or the point at issue is a termination. This study aims to evaluate postmodern architecture at this threshold after a short reminder of the past.

21. Yüzyılda Postmodern Mimarlığa Naif Bir Bakış: Bitiş mi, Dönüşüm mü?

Abstract

Venturi’nin Las Vegas çözümlemelerinin üstünden uzun yıllar geçti; zevklerimiz, bakış açılarımız ve tabii ki toplumsal yapımız değişime uğradı. Artık daha teknolojik bir dönemde yaşıyoruz. Gene Roddenberry’nin 1967 yılında yarattığı ve büyük beğenilerle yıllarca ekranda kalan, hatta bir kült haline gelen Uzay Yolu (Star Trek) dizisi bizim için çok naif, ama yetersiz bir tona dönüştü. İletişim kanalları çok arttı, teknoloji kendini bile şaşırtacak bir devinimde ilerlerken Lyotard’ın postmodern durum çözümlemeleri, ya da Hassan’ın devamlı yenilemek durumunda kaldığı postmodernizm tarifleri artık başka bir boyuta taşınmak zorunda. Hassan’ın deyişi ile, "... Postmodernizm artistik bir stil, tarihi bir akım, ya da zamanın ruhu olmaktan çok öte bir biçim aldı ve adeta bir ihanetin emri altında oluşan işaretlerin yorumlanmasına dönüştü." ( Hassan, 2003). Postmodern mimarlık 21. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğini yaşadığımız bugünlerde kimi eleştirmenlerce bir ‘çıkmaz sokağa’ doğru ilerlemektedir. Ancak, bir bitişe mi varılmıştır, ya da postmodern mimarlık bir dönüşüm mü geçirmektedir? sorusu tartışma konusudur. Bu çalışmanın amacı, kısa bir geçmiş hatırlatmasının ardından postmodern mimarlığın geldiği eşikte değerlendirilmesidir.
