Soil Properties of Trakya Formation Siltstones, (Ayazağa-İstanbul)

Abstract

In this study, the change of physical properties of siltstones, which is a facies of turbidity characteristic formation named Trakya, by in-situ atmospheric effect, was investigated. The disintegration of siltstone from gravel to clay by disintegration occurs in descending volume percentage order as gravel, sand, silt and clay. The sediment deposition has a CL class soil property and exhibit low plasticity, solid or semisolid state. The physical property values of the sediment decrease from gravel to clay and approach very small numerical values for clay. Equations are determined for sediment deposition when the sedimentation occur in maximum and minimum void ratio and it is found that while power functions are valid between the sediment dimension and specific, dry, natural unit weights, porosity, void ratio and saturation degree, an exponential function is valid between the sediment dimension and water content
