Freezing Thawing Behaviors of Trakya Formation Graywake, (Ayazağa-İstanbul)

Abstract

In this study, the freezing and thawing behavior of the greywacke facieses of Trakya formation, and the relationship of this behavior with physical and mechanical properties of the rocks were investigated. Graywake exhibits 2 different behaviour for the freezing and thawing. The freezing – thawing weight lost is less than 1% for 81.25% of rock specimens, and the weight lost is between 1% and 36% for 18.75% of rock specimens. The freezing – thawing weight lost values of rock changes between 0.027% and 35.193% and the average value is calculated as 0.236%. The relation between physical properties and freezing and thawing behavior is expressed as a polinomial function with 51% – 59% correlation for the rock having weight lost less than 1%. The relation between physical properties and freezing and thawing behavior is expressed as a linear function with 97% – 100% correlation for the rock having weight lost more than 1%. The relation between mechanical properties and freezing and thawing behavior is expressed as a power function with 64% correlation for the rock having weight lost less than 1% and with 100% correlation for the rock having weight lost more than 1%
