Determination of Soil Characteristics Using Geological, Geophysics and Geotechnical Methods in Tuzla (İstanbul)

Abstract

In order to figure out the engineering characteristics of 95243 m2 area located in Tuzla, İstanbul, mechanical soundings with total depth of 76.30 m were performed at 4 points, resiprocal seismic refraction studies were conducted at 4 points, vertical resistivity soundings were acquired at 4 points and microtremor measurements were performed at 4 suitable points in the investigation area. A cover soil layer with the thickness of 1.47-1.92 m based on P and S velocities of Vp1: 440-549 m/s ve Vs1: 160-199 m/s was determined. Beneath this cover a layer with P and S velocities changing between Vp2: 652-681 m/s ve Vs2: 256-267 m/s respectively was detected. Atterberg limits and 3- axial pressure tests were applied on the soil samples collected from the boreholes. The compressibility index Cc= 0.26-0.43 and plasticity index Ic= 0.10-1.82 were determined. The safety bearing capacity was obtained as 0.48-0.52 kg/cm2 . The soil group and the local soil class of the investigation area were found out as ‘CL-CH’, and ‘Z4’. Ta and TB values of the investigation area were resolved as TA= 0.20 sec, and TB= 0.90 sec. Vertical bearing coefficient and dominant soil acceleration were calculated as 1083–1134 t/m3 and >0.40 respectively. The dominant ground period of the investigation area were calculated from microtremor studies as To = 0.79sec.
