COLORS AS A SYMBOL IN UYGHUR FOLK EPICS: BLACKNESS, WHITENESS

Abstract

No matter what period of history it is, it’s seen that colors hold symbolic meanings for every culture. The usage and meanings of colors vary depending on societies, geographies and time. Colors not only appear in daily life or works of art to give an aesthetic beauty but also are used to make conscious or unconscious statements. Regarding the effects of colors on people and societies, some colors are considered lucky, some create positive or negative images and some gain importance because of the concept or situation that they symbolize. For this reason, it’s known that certain meanings are attributed to colors in society’s mind and customs. Black, white, red, blue/green are primary colors. Therefore, the use of these four colors in texts are functional, as well. The aim of the study is to focus on the symbolic meaning of white and black by considering the frequency of white and black usage in Uyghur folk epics.
