The Transformation of Evil Spirits in the Uyghurs from Shamanism to Islam

Abstract

Turks entered to different religious environment prior to acceptance of Islam such as Manichaeism, Buddhism, Christianity. Social, economic, cultural structures were affected due to the adoption of Islam, so a set change of beliefs and practices occurred. Also, the spirit thinking, which has an important place in the old Turkish belief system has been influenced by the culture circles. As is known, existence of the spirit has a quite ancient history in the Turkish belief system. Turks believed not only living beings, but also they believed the spirit of each object in the universe. There is the ancient thought of spirit on the basis of the belief items such as ancestors cult, stove cult, fire cult, water cult, mountain cult and so on. Shamans should have complied with the requirements of the new religion together with the adoption of Islam. They used amulets to smuggle evil spirits and they mention to names of prophet, angel, saints and sheikh in their prayers. Especially, evil creatures have showed more resistance to change due to the structures and taboo. In this context, we examined to change and transformation of evil spirits in belief systems of the Uyghurs from Shamanism to Islam

UYGURLARDA ŞAMANİZMDEN İSLAMA KÖTÜ RUHLARIN DÖNÜŞÜMÜ

Abstract

Türkler İslamiyet’i kabul etmeden önce Maniheizm, Budizm, Hıristiyanlık gibi farklı din dairelerine girmişlerdir. İslamiyet’in kabul edilmesiyle beraber sosyal, ekonomik, kültürel tüm yapılar etkilenmiş, dolayısıyla inanç ve pratiklerde bir dizi değişim meydana gelmiştir. Eski Türk inanç sisteminde önemli bir yere sahip olan ruh düşüncesi de geçilen kültür dairelerinden etkilenmiştir. Bilindiği gibi Türk inanç sisteminde ruhun varlığı oldukça eski bir geçmişe sahiptir. Sadece canlı varlıkların değil, evrendeki her bir nesnenin ruhu olduğuna inanan Türkler, bu bağlamda kült inancını geliştirmişlerdir. Atalar kültü, ocak kültü, ateş kültü, su kültü, dağ kültü vb. inanç ögelerinin arkasında kadim ruh düşüncesi bulunmaktadır. İslamiyet’in kabulüyle kamlar yeni dinin şartlarına uyma zorunluluğu yaşamışlardır. Kötü ruhları kaçırmak için muskalar kullanan kamlar, dualarında peygamber, melek, evliya ve şeyhlerin adlarını zikretmişlerdir. Özellikle yapıları gereği ve çoğu zaman adlarının tabu olması sebebiyle kötü karakterli varlıklar değişmeye daha fazla direnç göstermişlerdir. Bu bağlamda çalışmada Uygurların inanç sisteminde kötü ruhların Şamanizm’den İslam’a değişim ve dönüşümü ele alınıp incelenmiştir.
