The Politicization of Space and Its Economic-Policy Based Reinterpretation

Abstract

Towards the end of the 20th century, succeeding the decline of the debates focusing on the historical time, spatial analyzes have started to center in social sciences. Towards the 21st century, the subject of space has not only come to the fore as an important agenda item in social sciences, but also has become the object of intense interest, including the discussion of the epistemological and theoretical boundaries brought by the Enlightenment. This concentration has increased the emphasis on regarding of space as a political object. This process, which is considered as a new declination, leads to the spatialization of social processes and explains the interest of many social scientists in simultaneous and juxtaposition forms. Having been defined by David Harvey as 'geographical imagination', this shift has led to the political interpretation of space in social sciences and the economic-political analyzes on it. In this study is considered the historical analysis and pathways of the increasing emphasis on space social sciences, especially in the context of neo-Marxist geographers. This study aims to discuss the early theoretical and conceptual approaches to this transition.
