An Assessment of Conservative Women’s Perceptions of Conservatism: Keeping the Traditional and the Religious
Abstract
Conservatism is a historical reaction movement that emerged with the instinct of preserving the current conditions against the radical changes in the historical process. Examples of this reaction may differ both temporally and socially. Although conservatism acts with the instinct of protecting the existing, it has had to adapt to change, sometimes willingly and sometimes unintentionally, in the face of the phenomenon of change that swept the world. As a matter of fact, the situation in Turkey is similar. The best example of this change and confusion is women. At this point, both the perception of women of conservatism and the perception of conservatism of conservative women can change and show differences depending on time. As a matter of fact, while the definition of conservative women in the past was more introverted, today's conservative women claim to be active in all areas of life. This new meaning brings with it new interpretations and new life styles. Although the neoconservative woman identity built by changing conditions shows its existence in many areas of daily life, the question of what is preserved in the context of conservative women comes to mind. In this study, it is aimed to analyze the conservatism perceptions of conservative women through factors such as their education level, age and economic status in Erzurum. Women who define themselves as conservative; In the context of conservatism, it has been tried to determine what the main focal points are with the qualitative method. In the study, conservative women constituted the data source, and the interview and semi-structured question form formed the data collection tools. In the analysis of the collected data, coding was done with content analysis and the findings were interpreted by dividing them into categories.
