Understanding the Romani Community: The Example of İstanbul Arnavutköy Boyalık Neighborhood

Abstract

It’s impossible to not notice Romani people who exist in many countries, within the society they live in. They may seem interesting to some with their colorful clothing, cheerful attitudes and unique nomadic/seminomadic lives. The fact that Romani people who migrated from India to other countries have similar and different cultural because they still carry their root culture and affected by the society, they live in. Society is a whole of mechanical and organic solidarity by which different groups act in harmony in order of cultural richness. In this study the entire of the Romani community in Turkey which are divided into Rom, Dom and Lom aren’t all mentioned but the Rom who act with bureaucracy and modernization. A field study was carried out with them in Arnavutköy Boyalık Square in İstanbul in 2023-2024 by mixed research method, survey and participant observation technique. From 122 Romani people 25 women and men over the age of 18 was selected and tried to obtain the experiences of being Romani. In summary, this study is based on field research conducted with a holistic and inductive approach, focusing on social solidarity and stratification/ghettoization/otherization. As a result, because of being located in İstanbul, Boyalık Romani have changed, developed, and due to the benefits of urbanization their education and economic levels have improved, and thus have started to participate in social solidarity. It can be said that the nation-state structure and the new era domestic politics are also effective in the ongoing solidarity.
