Evaluation of Online Freelance Language Tutors’ Competencies Based on Learners' Opinions

Abstract

The disruptions caused by the effect of the global epidemic caused the educational activities to be reviewed. The increasing demand and expectation for online courses have led learners to seek new channels in language teaching. This search has increased the demand for online language teaching platforms as well as language courses given mostly at the institutions. Language lessons on these platforms are given by freelance tutors who are not affiliated with any institution. These tutors have very different educational and professional backgrounds. The tutors are classified
based on their experience, the total hours of given lessons, the previous students' comments, foreign language skills, and fees. Turkish is one of the languages taught by freelance tutors on online language teaching platforms. In the research the competencies for online language tutors were compiled according to the literature. The compiled competencies were classified as technical, individual, and pedagogical competencies. The created list was simplified with expert opinions. The research data were obtained with the 14 participants who took Turkish lessons through the Italki
platform. Participants were asked what they pay attention to when choosing a tutor on language platforms. Then, they were asked to rate the importance of the items in the tutors' competency list.

Öğrenici Görüşlerine Göre Çevrim İçi Serbest Çalışan Dil Öğreticilerinin Yeterliklerinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Küresel salgının da etkisiyle ortaya çıkan aksamalar eğitim faaliyetlerinin gözden geçirilmesine neden olmuştur. Çevrim içi derslere artan talep ve beklenti öğrenicileri dil öğretiminde yeni kanallar aramaya yönlendirmiştir. Bu arayış daha çok kurumsal bir çatı altında verilen dil derslerinin yanında çevrim içi dil öğretim platformlarına olan talebi de artırmıştır. Bu platformlarda dil dersleri herhangi bir kuruma bağlı olmayan serbest çalışan öğreticiler tarafından verilmektedir. Bu öğreticiler çok farklı eğitim ve mesleki geçmişe sahiptir. Öğreticiler uzmanlık durumları, verdikleri toplam ders saatleri, aldıkları kullanıcı yorumları, bildikleri diller ve derslerinin saatlik ücreti üzerinden değerlendirilerek öğreniciler tarafından seçilmektedir. Türkçe de çevrim içi dil öğretim platformlarında serbest çalışan öğreticiler tarafından öğretilen bir dildir. Araştırmada öncelikle alanyazın taranarak çevrim içi dil öğreticilerine yönelik yeterlikler derlenmiştir. Derlenen yeterlikler teknik, bireysel ve pedagojik yeterlikler olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Oluşturulan liste uzman görüşleri ile sadeleştirilmiştir. Araştırma verileri Italki çevrim içi dil öğretim platformu üzerinden Türkçe dersi alan 14 öğrenicinin katılımı ile elde edilmiştir. Katılımcılara ilk olarak dil platformlarında öğretici seçerken nelere dikkat ettiği sorulmuştur. Ardından öğretici yeterlik listesinde yer alan maddelerin önemini derecelendirmeleri istenmiştir.
