Use of Gold Standard Densitometry Techniques in the Determination of Body Composition

Abstract

This review examines gold standard densitometry-based methods for assessing body composition, focusing on hydrostatic weighing (HW) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP). Both techniques estimate body density to predict fat-free mass and fat mass. The review outlines the principles and procedural steps of each method while discussing their validity, reliability, and limitations. The accuracy of HW is strongly influenced by standardized underwater maneuvers and accurate residual volume determination. ADP, on the other hand, is highlighted for its practicality and minimally invasive nature. However, both methods can yield measurement errors due to individual physiological differences. It is emphasized that standardizing measurement procedures and integrating multi-compartment models can improve accuracy in body composition analysis. Overall, HW and ADP remain valuable tools in both research and clinical applications for evaluating health and physical performance.

Vücut Kompozisyonu Belirlenmesinde Altın Standart Densitometri Teknikleri Kullanımı
