Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

Ethics – Research Ethics:

The Journal of Management Information Systems adopts high international standards in research ethics. Compliance with ethical principles is the responsibility of the authors.

Author Responsibilities:

  • Data, methods, and results must not be used without permission, and all contributors must be properly acknowledged and cited.
  • Due care must be taken to protect personal and sensitive data, such as health data and trade secrets.
  • Research findings must be reported accurately and completely; results should be presented objectively and must not be manipulated under any circumstances.
  • The order of authorship should be determined according to the level of contribution of each author.
  • No discrimination should be made based on factors unrelated to scientific merit, such as gender, language, religion, or race.
  • In studies involving humans and animals, necessary precautions must be taken to ensure that no harm is caused to any living being as a result of the research.

Editor and Reviewer Responsibilities:

  • The Editor-in-Chief must evaluate manuscripts without regard to the authors’ ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religious beliefs, or political philosophy. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for ensuring that all submitted manuscripts undergo a fair double-blind peer review process.
  • The Editor-in-Chief does not allow any conflicts of interest among authors, editors, and reviewers. The Editor-in-Chief has full authority in assigning reviewers and is responsible for making the final decision regarding the publication of manuscripts in the journal.
  • Reviewers must not have any conflicts of interest related to the research, the authors, and/or the financial supporters of the research. They are expected to reach an objective judgment in their evaluations. Reviewers must ensure that all information regarding submitted manuscripts is kept confidential and must report any copyright infringement or plagiarism detected to the editor. If a reviewer does not feel qualified to evaluate the manuscript or believes that they cannot complete the review in a timely manner, they should inform the editor accordingly.

Ethics – Obtaining Legal/Special Ethics Committee Approval:

In accordance with the publication rules of the Journal of Management Information Systems, for studies requiring ethics committee approval, information regarding the institution from which the approval was obtained, as well as the purpose, scope, date, and reference number of the approval, must be clearly stated during the submission process to the journal. In addition, the obtained approval document must be uploaded to the journal system. Otherwise, the peer review process cannot be initiated.

Studies requiring ethics committee approval include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • All types of research conducted using qualitative or quantitative approaches that involve data collection from participants through methods such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, experiments, or other interview techniques
  • The use of humans or animals (including materials/data) for experimental or other scientific purposes
  • Retrospective studies conducted in accordance with personal data protection regulations

In addition, it must be stated that copyright regulations have been complied with for any intellectual and artistic works used. Permission must be obtained from the rightful owners for the use of scales, questionnaires, photographs, or other materials belonging to others, and such permissions must be properly documented.

Ethics – Publication Ethics:

  • All submitted manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication in another journal.
  • If the study is derived from a thesis or has been previously presented or published in a scientific event, this must be reported to the editor and clearly stated within the manuscript.
  • For studies previously used as theses, presentations, or conference papers and subsequently submitted to the journal as articles, information regarding the prior use must be provided as a footnote on the first page.
  • If the study has been published as an abstract paper, the title of the paper, the name of the event, and the date and location of the event must be specified.
  • If the study is derived from a graduate thesis, the title of the thesis, the name of the supervisor, the university and institute where the thesis was completed, as well as the completion date and location, must be stated.
  • If the study has been supported by a research institution or funding body, the name of the supporting organization, the project number, and the completion date must be indicated.
  • For studies that have been partially presented or published under conditions other than those specified above, the relevant event details must be clearly and distinctly stated.
  • In collaborative studies, authors must adopt the principle of shared responsibility.
  • It must be verified whether figures, tables, and other supporting materials used in the research are subject to copyright.
  • Plagiarism, duplication, fake authorship/denied authorship, fabrication of research/data, salami slicing, duplicate publication, copyright infringement, and concealment of conflicts of interest are considered unethical behaviors.

Article Withdrawal and Retraction Policy:

Author Responsibilities:

Authors are obliged to cooperate with the journal editor during the initial submission, review, and early view stages, as well as during withdrawal procedures. Authors who wish to withdraw their manuscript during the initial submission or review stage must complete the withdrawal process through the DergiPark system.

 Editorial Board Responsibilities:

If the Editorial Board detects copyright infringement or plagiarism in a manuscript under review, the manuscript may be withdrawn by the Editorial Board. The editor has the right to return the manuscript to the authors by clearly documenting and citing the identified issues.

If copyright infringement or plagiarism is detected in a published or early view article, the Editorial Board will carry out the withdrawal process within 15 days at the latest. If the article has already been published and an ethical violation is identified, the expression “Retracted” will be added to the title.

In addition, the Editorial Board may recommend that the publishers or editorial boards of the authors’ previously published works take necessary actions to ensure the validity and reliability of those publications or consider their retraction.

Policies – Conflict of Interest:

Authors:

In accordance with the publication policy of the Journal of Management Information Systems, only individuals who have made a genuine contribution to the study should be listed as authors in manuscripts submitted for publication. Authors are obliged to declare that there are no personal or financial conflicts of interest related to the study. This declaration must be provided through the journal system at the time of submission.

Reviewers:

Reviewers should inform the journal editor if they suspect any conflict of interest in the manuscript they are evaluating. If necessary, they should decline to review the manuscript.

Editors:

Editors must not have any personal or financial conflicts of interest related to the manuscripts.

Policies – Peer Review Process:

The Journal of Management Information Systems employs a double-blind peer review process. Therefore, manuscripts submitted to the journal must not include any identifying information such as academic titles or author names. Manuscripts that comply with the submission guidelines are first subject to an initial evaluation by the editor and are then assigned to at least three independent reviewers. Each manuscript is evaluated by at least three reviewers, and as a prerequisite for acceptance, it must be approved for publication by at least two reviewers. If a “revision” decision is made for a submitted manuscript, the authors are required to complete the necessary revisions and upload the final version of the manuscript to the system within 15 days. If the revisions are not completed and resubmitted within the specified period, the editors reserve the right to reject the manuscript. Following the reviewers’ approvals, the Editor has the authority to make the final decision regarding the publication of the manuscript.

Policies – Plagiarism Policy:

Manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Management Information Systems are subject to plagiarism screening processes (e.g., iThenticate). If plagiarism detected prior to publication exceeds 20% similarity for the entire manuscript or if similarity from a single source exceeds 5%, the manuscript is rejected without initiating the peer review process. If plagiarism is detected after publication, the article will be withdrawn, and an editorial note will be published in the journal to inform readers.

Policies – Copyright Policy:

After publication, all copyrights of the article belong to the Journal of Management Information Systems. No publication fee is paid to the authors for published works. Published articles may not be reproduced or published elsewhere without the permission of the Journal of Management Information Systems.

Policies – Article Processing Charges (APC) Policy:

In accordance with the publication rules of the Journal of Management Information Systems, no fees are charged for manuscript submission, evaluation, publication, or access to published articles. No payments are made to authors or reviewers for accepted and published manuscripts.

Price Policy:

No fees are charged from authors or their institutions under any circumstances. The journal does not charge any fees for manuscript submission or for the editorial and publication processes.
