THE INVESTIGATION OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERCEIVED STRESS LEVEL OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND STYLES OF COPING WITH STRESS

Abstract

Stress is an event that individuals are exposed to in daily life. Being new to the university and encountering in the education process can cause stress on students. The aim of the study is to determine the level of stress perceived by university students and to examine the relationship between perceived stress and stress coping styles. The sample of the study is 239 business department students studying at the Ankara University Faculty of Political Science. Data collection was conducted by questionnaire. In the analysis of obtained data, pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques were used. According to results, majority of the students had medium level stress; There was a negative and weak relationship between perceived stress and ‘a self-confident and optimistic approach’ to subdimentions of the scale of coping styles. , and also it was found that there is a positive and weak relationship between the "helpless approach and submissive approach subdimensions" and the perceived stress level. In addition, the level of perceived stress varies according to the gender variable; and that the perceived stress level and style of coping with stress did not differ according to grade, age, communication with friends and satisfaction level.
