PERCEPTION OF WORK AND LEISURE UNDER PRESSURE OF TIME
Abstract
This paper examines the shift in the meaning of work, which is no longer an activity belongs to the individual itself but was turned into a “beneficial activity to society” through strict time discipline. The perception of work and leisure of individuals, indeed, has continuously been changing. In this sense, a transformation from the social order where there was no awareness for two different time slices, called working and leisure time, to the prevailing social order where these two concepts are separated indisputably. One of the leading factors behind this transformation is time discipline. Consequently, working is no longer a free and internal sphere where individuals are the only actors, except the coercion of the nature, determining the rules, but an external sphere which belongs to the system. Moreover, today not only working sphere, but also leisure activities are determined by the system through time discipline.
