The Examination of the Strategic Staffing Activities of Turkish MNEs
Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the strategic staffing activities of
Turkish multinational enterprises (MNEs). The sample of the study consists of
leading, large and institutional 8 Turkish MNEs. The data gathering instrument
was selected as a questionnaire. The data obtained from the questionnaire,
which was conducted with each high-level human resources (HR) executives (e.g.,
vice president HR, HR director/president) of 8 Turkish MNEs, were analyzed.
According to the findings, all Turkish MNEs have “written” staffing strategies
and they take the strengths and weaknesses of the HR into account when
preparing staffing plans. Most of the high-level HR executives of Turkish MNEs attend the meetings in which the high-level
executives of other departments participate and they are the members of the top management teams.
Turkish MNEs mostly prefer “geocentric” and “ethnocentric” multinational
staffing approaches. The decision of
selection of high-level executives (e.g., general manager, chief executive
officer) for foreign subsidiaries of Turkish MNEs always belongs to the
headquarters in Turkey. Turkish MNEs handle the staffing function of HR in a
strategic way and they implement strategic staffing activities in coordination
with their foreign subsidiaries. According to the results, Turkish MNEs
efficiently implement strategic staffing activities. It is estimated that this
study will be a guide for future work.
