The Effect of Dietary Calcium Consumption of Different Amounts on Weight Loss and Anthropometric Measurements

Abstract

Introduction: This study was conducted to examine the effects of different amount of calcium consumption on weight loss and some anthropometric measurements in overweight and obese women. Material and Methods: The study was conducted with 75 women who were between 20 and 50 years of age and who were admitted to a diet counselling center for weight loss. Individuals who applied to the diet counselling center within a specified period of 4 months were included in the study, excluding pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, people with the diagnose of type 1 or type 2 DM, the ones with a chronic disease or taking drugs to loose weight. During the initial interview, the individuals’ demographic characteristics, diagnosed diseases, dietary histories, anthropometric measurements, physical activity levels were collected. Daily intake of calcium is calculated. The individuals are divided into three random groups. Following the initial interview, a personalized diet program which include different calcium amounts was developed for every individual. Individuals were followed during 8 weeks and anthropometric measurements were repeated. Diyetle Farklı Miktarlarda Kalsiyum Tüketiminin Ağırlık Kaybı ve Antropometrik Ölçümler Üzerine Etkisi

Abstract

Giriş: Bu çalışma kilolu ve obez kadınlarda diyetle farklı miktarlarda kalsiyum tüketiminin ağırlık kaybı ve bazı antropometrik ölçümler üzerine etkisini incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Materyal ve Metodlar: Çalışma zayıflama amacıyla özel bir diyet danışma merkezine başvuran, yaşları 20–50 arasında olan 75 kadın ile yürütülmüştür. Çalışmaya diyet danışma merkezine belirlenen 4 aylık periyot içinde başvuran ve gebe, emzikli olmayan, Tip 1, Tip 2 diabetes mellitus DM tanısı olmayan, zayıflamaya yönelik ilaç kullanmayan, kronik bir hastalığı olmayan bireyler dâhil edilmiştir. Bireylerle ilk görüşmede; demografik özellikleri, özgeçmişleri ve ağırlık değişimi öyküleri sorgulanmış, antropometrik ölçümleri alınmış, fiziksel aktivite düzeyleri belirlenmiştir. Çalışma öncesi kalsiyum tüketimleri saptanmıştır. Bireyler başvuru sıralarına göre rastgele olarak olgu sayısı eşit üç farklı gruba atanmıştır. Bireylere atandığı gruba göre farklı kalsiyum düzeyleri içeren 800 mg, 1000 mg,1200 mg zayıflama diyeti programı hazırlanmıştır. Bireyler 8 hafta boyunca takip edilmiş ve kontrollerde antropometrik ölçümleri tekrarlanmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırma sonucunda tüm gruplardaki ağırlık kaybı, beden kütle indeksi BKİ değişimi, yağ yüzdesindeki azalma ve bel-kalça çevresindeki azalma anlamlı bulunmuştur p
