The Investigation of CA 15-3 Antigen Levels in Local and Immigrant Women Patients Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Gaziantep

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer type among women globally and in Turkey. CA 15-3, a mucin antigen derived from the MUC1 gene, serves as a significant biomarker in the diagnosis and monitoring of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to compare CA 15-3 antigen levels in breast cancer patients in Turkey based on variables such as age, ethnicity, and disease stage. The results revealed that CA 15-3 levels were significantly higher in women over the age of 50 compared to those under 50 (p<0.001). Additionally, it was found that Syrian women had higher CA 15-3 antigen levels than Turkish women, suggesting that Syrian patients tend to present at more advanced stages of the disease. Comparisons between the patient and control groups showed that CA 15-3 levels were significantly elevated in the breast cancer patients (p<0.001). These findings suggest that CA 15-3 antigen plays a critical role in breast cancer diagnosis, and that factors such as age and ethnicity influence the levels of this biomarker. This study aims to contribute to the literature on public health epidemiology by comparing CA 15-3 levels between Turkish and Syrian women.
