Evaluation of the Relationship between Smartphone Addiction and Personal Development in Medical Faculty Students

Abstract

It is planned to assess the level of smartphone addiction among medical students using a personal development scale and to determine its impact on students' academic, social and personal development processes. The aim is to raise awareness by revealing the relationship between smartphone addiction and personal development processes, particularly among medical students with intensive academic programmes. Students enrolled in the 1st to 6th years of the Faculty of Medicine at H***** University were assessed for their attitudes and behaviours using the Personal Development Scale-Revised Turkish Version (PPS-R) and the Smartphone Addiction Scale – Short Form (SAS-SV). Students who met the participation criteria voluntarily completed an online survey that included demographic information, the PPS-R, and the SAS-SV. The results were evaluated using Chi-square and ANOVA tests. Statistical significance was accepted at p<0.05. It was found that social media use negatively affected participation in offline activities, while smartphone addiction led to difficulties in personal development and social interaction. In addition, psychological effects such as impatience and irritability were observed in the absence of digital media. We believe that a balanced use of smartphones will facilitate the development of educational and social activities and personal development, while excessive use will have a negative effect.
