The main find on a pedestal unearthed during
excavations in the 2005 season at Patara
was a relief of Artemis. This article investigates
the similarities and differences of this
figure of Artemis, in comparison with the type
known in scientific literature as the Artemis of
Versailles, which has been the focus of multilayered
debates concerning its date and artist.
The Artemis figure is also compared with
the result of typological studies of this type
to the present day. Since it is one of the latest
examples of this type, the Pataran relief of
Artemis should be considered to be a local interpretation
of the Versailles Artemis type. Yet
it is original in respect to copy criticism and
recension. Found reused in a wall of one of
the rooms in the East Porticus of the Harbour
Street at Patara, the find of this base with its
figural relief requires a new evaluation of the
data concerning the place of this goddess within
the cult tradition of the city.
