Examining the Cognitive Structures of the Students of Tourism Students for the Concept of “Winter Tourism”, the Case for the City of Giresun
Abstract
Tourism is considered as an important option for the prosperity of developing countries. The tourism industry has been developing rapidly in Turkey as well as in the rest of the world in recent years. Environmental awareness has been increasing. Although Turkey is one of the leading countries in the world for mass tourism and despite having a high potential for alternative tourism, it hasn’t been fulfilling this potential. Turkey can accommodate a variety of needs for tourists as well as having historical, cultural and natural beauty and a country where different types of tourism can exist. In order to eliminate the imbalance in regions for tourism and spread it throughout the year, Turkey should move towards alternative tourism. One kind of alternative tourism is winter tourism. Participation in winter tourism has been increasing every year and it has been a product which has existed for a long time. Turkey has a great potential for winter tourism. In this research qualitative method has been used. In scope of research Word association method (KIT) has been used amongst undergraduate students in Giresun University Bulancak School of Applied Sciences. The purpose of the research, is to analyse the winter tourism concept of cognitive structure by participants, who study tourism with the word association method. This study shows that when the cognitive structures of students are examined, Uludağ, Palandöken and Erciyes destinations have been rated ahead of other destinations.
