Evaluation Of Psychiatric Complaints And Diagnoses Associated With Skin Diseases: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Objective: Skin diseases can impact social and psychological well-being alongside physical health. This study examined psychiatric follow-up rates and psychiatric complaints in dermatologic patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 791 patients from Dermatology outpatient clinic (July 2022–January 2023) participated. They completed a sociodemographic form and a psychiatric complaint screening list. Results: Of the participants, 496 (63.7%) were female, and 295 (37.3%) were male. The most common dermatologic conditions were acneiform (27.9%), inflammatory (19.2%), and infectious (17.2%) dermatoses. Psychiatric follow-up history was reported in 93 (11.8%) patients, while 112 (14.2%) used psychiatric medication. Depressive mood was the most frequent psychiatric complaint (50%), followed by anxiety (30%) and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Conclusion: Studies suggest psychiatric issues contribute to the onset or worsening of skin diseases. The high prevalence of depressive mood in dermatologic patients highlights the need for psychiatric evaluation, which could improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.
