The Impact of Fear of Missing Out and Life Satisfaction on Instagram Addiction in University Students' Development of Social Media Awareness Regarding Appearance

Abstract

Objective: This study examined the effect of appearance-related social media consciousness, fear of missing out and life satisfaction on Instagram addiction among university students. Materials and Methods This correlational and cross-sectional study, conducted between January and June 2024, consists of 326 university students selected through stratified sampling at a university in Western Anatolia. Demographic Information Form, Appearance-Related Social Media Consciousness Scale, Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) Scale, Instagram Addiction Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale were used as data collection tools in the study. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: According to hierarchical regression analysis, appearance-related social media consciousness alone explained 15% of the variance on Instagram addiction. When fear of missing out was added to the model, the explained variance increased to 23%. With the inclusion of life satisfaction, the explained variance reached 26%. Conclusion: The results indicate that Instagram addiction is a multidimensional phenomenon, with appearance-related social media consciousness, fear of missing out, and low life satisfaction emerging as significant psychosocial predictors. Intervention programs aimed at enhancing digital media literacy and psychological resilience among university students are recommended.
