Determining The Factors Affecting the Social Well-Being of Young Adults: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study is to systematically examine the factors affecting young people's social well-being. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines, English articles published between 2000 and 2022 in the Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases were screened. A total of 8,545 publications were identified, and 27 studies that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. JBI checklists were used for the quality assessment of the studies. Results: The study found that the most important factors affecting young people's social well-being include participation in volunteer activities, group sports, and belonging to a group. In addition, having strong social networks and being centrally connected are also factors that increase social well-being. Factors negatively affecting young people's social well-being include substance use or proximity to individuals who use substances, academic stress, and significant life events such as COVID-19. It has been determined that young people's personality traits, as well as factors such as hope and spirituality, are also related to social well-being. Furthermore, sociodemographic characteristics have been found to be influential depending on the cultural context. Conclusion: The social well-being of young people is one of the most important components of their health. To improve their social well-being, intervention programs and policies that increase psychological resilience should be implemented with a proactive approach.
