Surgical Site Infection in Colorectal Surgery and Studies Related to Nursing: A Scopus‑Based Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to examine the scientific literature on surgical site infections in colorectal surgery within the field of nursing using bibliometric analysis and science mapping techniques. Materials and Methods: Data were retrieved from the Scopus database using the keywords “colorectal surgery,” “surgical site infection,” and “nurse.” The analysis focused on publication trends, influential authors and institutions, leading journals, and the visualization of research networks through co-occurrence and co-authorship analyses. Results: A total of 25 publications met the inclusion criteria. Most of the publications were research articles (92%, n=23), followed by conference papers (4%, n=1) and review articles (4%, n=1), reflecting contributions from both nursing and medical disciplines. The highest number of publications was recorded in 2021 (16%, n=4). The journal with the highest number of publications was Colorectal Disease (12%, n=3). Keyword network analysis showed that “surgical site infection” was the most frequently used term and demonstrated strong co-occurrence relationships with other keywords. The United States emerged as the most productive country in this research field. Conclusion: By mapping the existing literature, this study highlights current research patterns and provides a foundation for future interdisciplinary studies aimed at improving nursing practices and patient outcomes in colorectal surgery. Keywords: Bibliometric analysis, surgical site infection, SSI, nursing, perioperative nurses, colorectal surgery
