Health-Promotion Training Effects on Sleep and Quality of Life in Maternal Obesity
Abstract
Objective: This study evaluated the effect of health promotion behaviour education on sleep quality and obesity-specific quality of life in pregnant women with maternal obesity. Materials and Methods: This randomised controlled trial was conducted at family health centres affiliated with the Aydın Provincial Health Directorate between January 1 and June 30, 2022. A total of 620 pregnant women constituted the study population. Of these, 44 eligible pregnant women with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30.00 kg/m² were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 22) or the control group (n = 22). Following losses during follow-up, the study was completed with 40 participants, including 20 women in each group. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Information Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Obesity-Specific Quality of Life Scale, and analyzed using SPSS 24.0. Baseline characteristics were compared using appropriate tests for continuous and categorical variables. Changes in PSQI and OSQOL scores were analyzed using generalised estimating equations, and group, time, and group × time effects were tested using the Wald chi-square test. Results: Time and group × time effects were significant for PSQI scores. Sleep quality improved over time in the intervention group (p < 0.001), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group. Group, time, and group × time effects were not significant for OSQOL scores, indicating no intervention effect on obesity-specific quality of life. Conclusion: The education improved sleep quality but had no significant short-term effect on obesity-specific quality of life.
