PHYSICIANS' SLEEP QUALITY AND WORK PRODUCTIVITY: FOMO AS A MEDIATOR

Öz

Abstract Aim; Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) has garnered considerable research interest in recent years, with its correlations extending to a range of psychosocial factors. Our research was designed to examine how FoMO relates to physicians' sleep quality and work productivity. Method; 184 physicians aged between 24-45 years were included in the research. Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOS), Endicott Work Productivity Scale (EWPS) and Cumhuriyet Subjective Sleep Quality Scale (CSSQS) were utilized as data measurement tools. Study data were collected online. Relationships between the scales were investigated with correlation tests. We employed path analysis to explore whether FoMOS served as a mediator in the relationship between CSSQS and EWPS. Results; According to the results of the analysis, around 69.6% of the participants were employed as specialist physicians, with the highest proportion (78.4%) in internal medicine. The social networking platforms most commonly utilized were WhatsApp (95.7%), YouTube (87.9%), and Instagram (86.4%). A notable and positive correlation was found between FoMO and both poor sleep quality (Spearman's rho=0.238, p = 0.001) and low work productivity (Spearman's rho=0.378, p<0.001). Furthermore, our research revealed that FoMO played a mediating role in linking poor sleep quality to decreased work productivity. Conclusion; Our study offers preliminary understanding of the link between FoMO and both sleep quality and work productivity within the physician community. Further exploration is required to fully grasp the impact and intermediary function of FoMO. Subsequent researchs are expected to explore potential strategies aimed at alleviating the adverse consequences associated with FoMO.
