Examining High School Teachers’ Curriculum Literacy: The Case of İzmir Province

Abstract

Education has historically played a critical role in social progress and transformation, and within this context, teachers’ curriculum literacy is considered an important factor in improving educational quality. This study aims to examine the curriculum literacy levels of teachers working in public high schools in İzmir province across various variables. Curriculum literacy, a relatively new concept in the field of educational sciences, encompasses teachers’ abilities to understand, implement, value, and critically evaluate curricula. The main research question of the study is whether the curriculum literacy perception of high school teachers in İzmir differ significantly across certain variables. In this context, the sub-problems were determined to be whether teachers’ curriculum literacy levels differ significantly by age, subject area, type of school, years of professional experience, and type of higher education program from which they graduated. The study was conducted with 1,107 teachers working in public high schools in İzmir during the 2023–2024 academic year. Using a survey research design, curriculum literacy levels and their differences according to various variables were examined. The “Curriculum Literacy Perception Scale (CLPS)” was used as the data collection instrument. Data were collected through both face-to-face and online questionnaires and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The findings revealed that teachers generally had high levels of curriculum literacy perceptions across all sub-dimensions. The results indicated that age and professional seniority did not have a significant effect on perceptions of curriculum literacy.
