Öz

Throughout the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the strong immune system denotes the importance of adequate and balanced nutrition. However, searching for unprecedented miraculous foods to protect from the symptoms of the COVID-19 causes individuals to prefer herbal support products more. The use of botanical dietary supplements is one of the alternative therapies frequently preferred by populations around the world. John’s wort, echinacea, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, garlic, licorice root and black cumin are the leading herbal supplements that are associated with respiratory diseases and consumed by individuals during the coronavirus pandemic. It has been reported that the potential effects of botanical dietary supplements on COVID-19 can be explained by its antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can strengthen the immune system. Consuming echinacea, ginger, garlic, turmeric, and cinnamon in the specified amounts and frequency could benefit individuals during the pandemic. In addition, botanicals do not cause side effects if the recommendations on the amount, frequency and storage conditions used are followed. However, it should not be forgotten that the interaction of these products with some foods and drugs used in modern medicine can adversely affect health. In the ongoing battle against the COVID-19, the research on the treatment and prevention of the coronavirus disease using herbal supplements has not yet been clarified, and emphasizing further research is needed. In this review, the use of herbal supplements, which are thought to be beneficial for individuals before, during and after the diagnosis of coronavirus, has been evaluated with evidence-based medicine.
