Review of the Pharmacological Properties of Crassocephalum bauchiense

Abstract

Crassocephalum bauchiense, a member of the Asteraceae family, is extensively used in traditional medicine across various African regions. Ethnobotanical surveys reveal the plant's utilization in treating ailments such as gastrointestinal disorders, malaria, and inflammation. Phytochemical analyses have identified diverse bioactive compounds, including phenols, tannins, triterpenes, and alkaloids, which are attributed to its medicinal efficacy. Pharmacological investigations demonstrate that C. bauchiense exhibits significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-plasmodial, antinociceptive, sedative, and anti-anxiety activities. Furthermore, it is used to boost fertility and, has been associated with low toxicity. Based on these promising properties, further research is necessary to elucidate the precise mechanisms of action, optimize extraction methods, and conduct comprehensive toxicity studies to fully harness its medicinal benefits. Understanding these aspects is crucial for the development of standardized therapeutic formulations. This review underscores the pharmacological potential of C. bauchiense and advocates for more extensive studies.
