Rare Intraoral White Spongeous Nevus: A Case Report

Abstract

White sponge nevus (WSN) is a rare autosomal dominant hereditary genodermatosis that predominantly affects non-keratinized mucosal surfaces. It is characterized by bilateral, thickened white plaques on the oral mucosa and may clinically resemble other white lesions. Therefore, in order to establish an accurate diagnosis, histopathological evaluation is required in addition to anamnesis and clinical findings. A male patient in his thirties presented to our clinic with complaints of widespread lesions in the oral cavity. Intraoral examination revealed asymptomatic white plaques, particularly prominent on the bilateral buccal mucosa. Based on the clinical and histopathological findings, the patient was diagnosed with WSN. The patient was treated with a 0.25% tetracycline mouth rinse for 12 weeks. At the follow-up visits, although a subjective reduction in lesion thickness was observed based on intraoral examination and comparison of serial photographs, no definitive conclusion can be drawn regarding treatment efficacy.
