Diş Hekimliği Öğrencilerinin İmplantoloji Bilgi Düzeyi ve Öz Değerlendirmelerinin Eğitim Düzeyine Göre Karşılaştırmalı Değerlendirilmesi
Abstract

Comparative Evaluation of Dental Students' Implantology Knowledge and Self-Evaluation According to Educational Level
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to compare implantology knowledge levels and self-evaluation scores between fourth- and fifth-year dental students and to examine the relationship between objective knowledge and self-evaluation.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted among fourth- and fifth-year students at a faculty of dentistry. A total of 107 students participated. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire including demographic variables, a 21-item Likert-type implantology self-evaluation scale, and 21 objective implantology knowledge questions. Two-group comparisons were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test, and correlations between self-evaluation and knowledge scores were assessed using Spearman rank correlation analysis.
Results: Fifth-year students had significantly higher knowledge scores than fourth-year students (74.49 ± 17.01 vs. 67.43 ± 13.99; p<0.001). Self-evaluation scores were also significantly higher in fifth-year students (79.13 ± 14.59) than in fourth-year students (58.77 ± 15.99; p<0.001). No significant differences were found between female and male students in overall knowledge or self-evaluation scores (p=0.381 and p=0.333, respectively). A positive and statistically significant correlation was observed between self-evaluation and knowledge scores in the total sample (rho=0.347; p=0.001).
Conclusion: Advancement in undergraduate dental education was associated with higher implantology knowledge and self-evaluation scores. The moderate correlation between self-evaluation and knowledge suggests that perceived competence partly reflects objective knowledge but should not be interpreted as a direct indicator of clinical competence. Strengthening structured theoretical and clinical implantology education may support students' preparedness for future practice.
