Abstract

Background: Acute cough is one of the most frequent complaints in pediatric practice and significantly affects both children and their families. Due to safety concerns regarding conventional antitussive medications, interest in herbal therapies has increased.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and quality-of-life impact of a herbal cough syrup containing Grindelia, Plantago, and Helichrysum in children aged 10–12 years.
Methods: This prospective single-arm study included 120 children with acute cough. All participants received the herbal syrup for 7 days. Cough severity, pediatric and parental quality of life, parental satisfaction, and safety outcomes were assessed.
Results: Cough severity decreased significantly by Day 3 and Day 7 (p < 0.001). Both the child's and the parent's quality-of-life scores improved significantly. Parental satisfaction was high, and no serious adverse events were observed.
Conclusion: The herbal cough syrup demonstrated significant clinical effectiveness, excellent tolerability, and meaningful improvements in quality of life, supporting its use as a complementary therapy in pediatric cough management.
