Essential Oil Content and Site Characteristics of Origanum minutiflorum

Abstract

Türkiye is a country rich in medicinal and aromatic plant species. Many species are threatened with extinction due to direct harvesting from the wild. To reduce the negative effects on these plants, it is crucial to determine their site factors before cultivation. Origanum minutiflorum O. Schwarz & P.H. Davis is an endemic species that is one of the most important medicinal and aromatic plants. Our study aimed to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the ecological requirements and essential oils of the species across all its distribution areas. The plant samples of O. minutiflorum were collected during the flowering period from 20 different localities. Essential oils was obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus in accordance with the European Pharmacopoeia, and their compounds were determined by gas chromatographic methods (GC-FID and GC/MS). Data on major chemical compounds (≥3%) were transferred to the PC-ORD program and principal component analysis was applied. Relationships between essential oil and environmental factors were determined using Pearson and Kendall correlation analysis. There wasn’t found important relationship. Carvacrol was found as the main constituent of essential oil. The carvacrol content rangeds from 78.75% to 87.15%. The essential oil yield varied between 3.30 and 5.18 mL/100g. It was found that different habitat of the species were stable in terms of essential oil yield and chemical compounds. The habitat requirements of the species have been determined in detail in its natural range.
