Social Media Addiction as a Moderator Between Happiness and Leisure Boredom

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the moderating role of social media addiction in the effect of happiness on the perception of boredom in leisure. The study was designed using a correlational survey model. The study group consisted of members of youth centres in the province and districts of Karaman (n=431). The Oxford Happiness Scale Short Form, the Perceived Boredom in Leisure Scale, and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale were used as data collection tools. Confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and multi-group analysis were applied in the analysis of the data. According to the findings, happiness significantly predicts the perception of boredom in leisure in a positive direction (β= .378, p<.001). The moderating effect of social media addiction was found to be significant (β= -.104, p<.01). According to the results of the simple slope analysis, the happiness-boredom relationship is strong in those with low social media addiction (β= .466) and weak in those with high social media addiction (β= .285). Multiple group analyses revealed that the moderator effect was significant among males, low social media users, and individuals over the age of 26. In conclusion, social media addiction moderates the relationship between happiness and perceived boredom in leisure in a weakening direction.
